PGI — Personal General Insurance
Property and household insurance protects a person's home structure and belongings against fire and other insured perils, using core mechanics — insured perils, the sum insured, the principle of average against underinsurance, and the reinstatement-versus-indemnity basis of settlement — that determine how much of a loss the policy will actually pay.

Property and household insurance is the personal-lines family that protects the places people live and the things they keep in them. It sits on the foundations of general (non-life) insurance: an insurable interest in the property, indemnity as the guiding principle, and a defined set of insured perils.
The cover splits broadly into two different subjects of insurance, which must not be confused:
Because these are distinct subjects, a person may need more than one policy or section to be fully protected: one covering the structure, another covering contents, and cover for renovations they have paid for themselves.
Fire insurance is the oldest and most fundamental form of property cover. In its narrowest traditional form it indemnifies the insured against loss or damage to insured property caused by FIRE, LIGHTNING and (typically) explosion of domestic gas used for cooking or heating.
A key point for the exam is what a basic fire policy is really insuring: the STRUCTURE, not the contents or the owner's renovations. A standard fire policy on a dwelling responds to damage to the building fabric, but does not automatically pay for furniture, personal belongings or renovation works unless those are separately arranged.
Modern household and 'home' packages extend far beyond fire alone, bundling fire with a wider range of perils and often adding contents, personal liability and other benefits into a single package. But conceptually the fire element remains the core: it answers the question 'what happens if the building burns or is otherwise physically damaged by an insured peril?'

Fire insurance also illustrates the requirement of INSURABLE INTEREST — the insured must stand to suffer a financial loss if the property is damaged, whether as owner, mortgagor or otherwise having a legal or financial stake in it.
