Farid is 40. He has S$40,000 in his Ordinary Account (OA) and S$25,000 in his Special Account (SA), with no MediSave counted. Ignoring base interest, how much EXTRA interest does he earn in a year?
Members below 55 earn +1% p.a. on the first S$60,000 of combined balances, but no more than S$20,000 may be counted from the OA. His OA of S$40,000 counts only S$20,000; add SA S$25,000, giving qualifying balances of S$45,000 (below the S$60,000 ceiling). Extra interest = 1% x S$45,000 = S$450.
Counting the full S$65,000 and capping to S$60,000 gives S$600 — but the S$20,000 OA cap excludes S$20,000 of his OA from the extra interest.
