What Does CMFAS RES5 Cost? Exam & Licensing Fees Explained

Getting CMFAS RES5 done is inexpensive next to most professional qualifications — but the sticker price on the exam fee is not the whole bill, and there are several ways to lose that fee without ever answering a question. This guide breaks down what you are actually paying for, what quietly moves the number up or down, and where candidates waste money.

What actually makes up the bill

Three things that move your exam fee

Two candidates sitting the same paper can pay different amounts. SCI's published fee table varies along these lines, so it is worth checking which one applies to you before you click register:

• Member vs non-member. SCI lists a lower rate for SCI/IBF members than for non-members. If you are joining a firm, ask which category you fall under — it can be the difference between the two columns on the fee table.
• When you sit. Fees are published separately for the weekday daytime session and for the after-hours weekday and weekend sessions, with the out-of-hours slots priced higher. If your schedule allows a weekday morning sitting, that is the cheaper column.
• First attempt or re-take — same price. With effect from 1 April 2024 SCI standardised its fees so that there is no differentiation in the examination fee for first attempt or subsequent attempt. A re-sit costs a full attempt, not a discounted one.

The published fee is also stated as inclusive of the registration fee and GST, so the headline figure is closer to your all-in cost than you might expect — there is no separate registration line item to budget on top.

Money you can lose without sitting the paper

This is the part most cost articles skip, and it is where real money goes. SCI's examination rules are strict, and several of them are financial:

• You cannot cancel. SCI's rules state plainly that “cancellation of examination registrations are not allowed”. Once you have booked and paid, backing out for a refund is not an option — so be sure of your date before you register.
• Turning up very late costs you the whole fee. Candidates who arrive more than 30 minutes after the exam starts are not allowed to sit and are recorded as absent; SCI states that in that case the examination fees are non-refundable, non-deferrable and non-transferrable. • A name mismatch is an expensive typo. If the name or ID number on your identification does not match exactly what you gave SCI at registration, you can be turned away — and SCI states such candidates have to pay all fees to re-register. Register exactly as your NRIC or passport reads, and fix any discrepancy with SCI ahead of time rather than at the door.
• Rescheduling is not free-form.Moving your sitting is handled under SCI's prevailing rescheduling policy, whose administrative fee is tiered by how many working days before the exam you ask — it increases as the date approaches. If you are absent, note that with effect from 9 December 2024 SCI replaced the old partial-refund option with a rescheduling arrangement: only a short list of medical and compassionate grounds qualifies, you must apply with documentary evidence within three working days of the missed exam, and missing that window means re-registering and paying the exam fee again. • Prohibited items can cost you far more than a fee. Being caught with an unauthorised device or material carries a minimum six-month debarment from all SCI examinations on top of disqualification from the paper — months of lost income, not just a lost fee.

Don't pay for the wrong study text

RES5 is now studied from an eBook rather than a printed volume, and SCI maintains a version control record at the back of it. That matters for your wallet in two ways: second-hand hard copies are not the current material, and third-party notes written against an older edition may be teaching you superseded rules. The biggest avoidable cost is the re-sit

Put the pieces together and the arithmetic is simple: your total is the exam fee multiplied by the number of attempts, plus materials, plus any admin fees you trigger along the way. The single biggest lever is that multiplier. Because there is no retaker discount, a second attempt roughly doubles the exam cost — and adds weeks of delay before you can be appointed and start earning.

Who pays — you or your firm?

Many candidates sit RES5 while joining, or preparing to join, an appointing firm, and firms differ on whether they sponsor the exam fee outright, reimburse it on a pass, or leave it to you. Ask before you pay — and ask at the same time whether you register under a member or non-member rate. Note that SCI reserves the right to release your official result to your employer on a bona fide request, regardless of who registered or paid for the exam.
