CMFAS RES5 Exam Day: What to Expect

Knowing what CMFAS RES5 exam day looks like takes most of the nerves out of it. You've done the studying; now the job is simply to turn up prepared, calm and on time. This guide walks you through the whole day — the night before, what to pack, the admission window and the late cut-off, the rules inside the examination room, the technique that saves marks, and what happens the moment you click “Finish”.

Most of what follows comes from SCI's own Examination Rules and Regulations for On-Site Examinations. Read them once yourself before the day — almost every wasted exam fee we hear about is a rule in that document that someone skipped.

The exam-day timeline

The two timings that actually decide whether you sit the exam are the admission window and the late cut-off. SCI's rules set both:

Plan your route so that a delayed train still gets you there inside the admission window, not inside the 30-minute grace period. The grace period is a safety net, not a plan — you lose exam time you never get back.

Before the day

The single best way to walk in calm is to have already sat full timed mock exams so nothing about the format is a surprise. In the last 24 hours, the priorities change: stop taking in new material, review your mistake bank lightly, and protect your sleep. A fresh brain scores higher than a tired, crammed one.

• Confirm the venue and reporting time. The exam is a computer-based test at the SCI examination centre, which SCI lists at Suntec Tower Two. Check your confirmation for your exact venue, slot and reporting time.
• Check your name matches exactly. Your name and ID number must match what you gave SCI at registration. Invigilators cannot correct records at the door — changes to name, identification number or date of birth need a prior appointment with SCI during office hours at least one working day before your exam date. A mismatch means being turned away and re-registering at full fee.
• Pack the night before(see the checklist below) so you're not hunting for your ID in the morning.
• Sleep. Do one light timed set if it settles you, then switch off. Cramming past midnight costs more marks than it earns.

What to bring

The calculator rule, precisely

SCI provides no calculator and no stationery, so bring your own. Any model of non-programmable calculator is acceptable. Calculators are not allowed if they are programmable or have graphic or word-display capability — so leave the graphing calculator and anything with a text screen at home. One easily-missed detail: you are personally responsible for making sure there is nothing tucked inside the jacket or casing of your calculator. A forgotten scrap of paper in the lid is exactly the kind of thing that turns a good day into a cheating investigation.

Leave bulky items at home too — SCI has no storage space for luggage, foldable bicycles or personal mobility devices.

Arriving at the venue

Aim to reach the centre well before the reporting time. That gives you room to clear ID verification, store your belongings and settle at your workstation without rushing. All personal belongings — mobile and electronic devices, study materials, notes — go in the area designated for them, and mobile devices must be switched off and left in your bag. SCI does not take responsibility for loss or damage, so don't bring valuables you'd hate to lose.

Masks are not compulsory, but if you wear one you will be asked to unmask for facial recognition during identity verification. Candidates with flu-like symptoms or a cough and no mask can be turned away, so pack a mask even if you don't plan to wear it. If the invigilator is not satisfied with your first ID, they can ask for an alternative one — and the time that takes does not earn you extra time in the exam.

The format on the day

RES5 is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam. You'll work through the questions on screen at your workstation, in the seat allocated to you. Take a moment at the start to familiarise yourself with the on-screen controls — SCI expects candidates to do this before beginning, and fumbling with the interface mid-paper costs real minutes. The official start and end times are the ones displayed on your own screen, not your watch.

The rules inside the room

These are worth reading once so nothing catches you out. The consequences SCI attaches to them are not token penalties — a device in your pocket can end a career before it starts.

Technique on the paper

Good technique is where prepared candidates pull ahead:

• Watch the stem for NOT / EXCEPT / LEAST. Negatively-worded questions flip the answer, and it's heartbreaking to lose a mark you knew because you skimmed the word "not".
• Don't over-dwell. If a question stalls you, flag it, put down your best guess, and return with fresh eyes later.
• Answer everything. With no penalty for wrong answers, a blank is strictly worse than a guess.
• For scenario questions, read the question first, then the scenario, so you read the facts for what actually matters.

After the exam: results and re-sits

There is no waiting. RES5 is a computer-screen examination, and SCI states that CMFAS candidates receive their results immediately upon completion. You follow the on-screen instructions and click “Finish”, then collect your printed result slip from the invigilator inside the examination room and check that it belongs to you before you leave. You must also return your rough paper — used and unused, intact — and leave nothing on the table.

Once you attempt the exam, every answer you submitted is final. If you believe a question contained an error, the route is to e-mail SCI directly rather than raise it with the invigilator. The result slip itself is the official document — SCI issues no certificate parchment for CMFAS — and results are final, with no appeals or re-checks entertained.
