CMFAS RES5 Results & What Happens Next

RES5 is a computer-screen examination, and that single fact answers most of the questions candidates have about results: you do not wait days for an email, there is no marking period to agonise over, and there is nothing to appeal afterwards. You find out in the exam room. This guide covers exactly what happens after you click “Finish”, what your result slip is worth, what your options are if you fall short, and what your firm does once you pass.

You get your result immediately, in the exam room

SCI's examination rules are explicit: for CMFAS examinations, candidates receive their examination results immediately upon completion of the computer-screen mode examinations. There is no results day to wait for.

The sequence at the end of your sitting is:

• You click the “Finish” button on the examination system, following the on-screen instructions.
• You collect your printed result slip from the invigilator in the examination room — and SCI asks you to check the slip is actually yours before you leave the room. Do check. It is the one moment a mix-up is easily fixed.
• You return all rough paper, used and unused, to the invigilator, and leave nothing on the table.

The result slip is the official record — and it is final

The slip is not a provisional printout. SCI states that the result slips candidates receive after completing their examinations are official, that a result slip is an official written document certifying the examination outcome of the candidate in the examination concerned, and that all examination results awarded by SCI are final.

One distinction worth drawing, because candidates conflate the two: a query about a question is not an appeal against a result. By attempting the paper you are deemed to have acknowledged your submitted answers as final, but if you believe there is an error in a question itself, SCI directs you to e-mail your query to them directly. Technical problems are different again — raise those with the invigilator during the exam, as SCI states notification of technical problems after the examination will not be entertained.

Keep the slip: there is no certificate coming

This catches people out months later. SCI's rules state that for CMFAS examinations no certificate parchment will be issued — unlike some of SCI's diploma and chartered programmes, which do get a certificate emailed. Your result slip is your evidence of the pass.

Photograph or scan it before you leave the building and keep the paper copy somewhere sensible. Compliance teams ask for it when you are onboarded, and it is a miserable thing to be hunting for a year later.

Results are otherwise strictly confidential, with one exception worth knowing: SCI reserves the right to release your official result on a request from your employer, prospective employer or former employer if it is satisfied the request is bona fide — regardless of whether you or your employer registered and paid for the exam.

If you did not pass

It is a setback, not a disqualification. Candidates who fall short re-register for another sitting through SCI in the ordinary way, subject to seat availability on the date they want. Check SCI's current registration terms for any conditions that apply between attempts rather than assuming there are none.

Two things to be clear-eyed about before you rebook:

• A re-sit is a full fee. SCI standardised its examination fees with effect from 1 April 2024 so that there is no differentiation in the fee between a first attempt and a subsequent attempt. There is no retaker discount — see the RES5 cost guide.
• Booking early is not the same as being ready. Since cancellation is not allowed and rescheduling can attract an administrative fee, pick a date you can genuinely be prepared for rather than the first available slot.

The useful thing about failing a computer-screen paper is that the experience is fresh: you know which sections felt shaky. Convert that into targeted work — drill questions by topic on your weak areas rather than re-reading the study text front to back, then sit a full timed mock and confirm you are clearing the pass mark on both parts with room to spare. If you passed: what actually happens next

Passing RES5 clears an examination requirement. It does not, by itself, make you a representative — you cannot start advising clients on the strength of the slip alone.

• Your firm makes the appointment, not you.An appointed representative is notified to MAS by the financial adviser appointing them; individuals do not apply to MAS directly. Your next call is to your firm's licensing or compliance team, slip in hand.
• RES5 may not be the only module you need. The modules required depend on the products you will advise on — for example collective investment schemes or life policies sit in their own CMFAS modules. • Competency does not stop at the exam.Once appointed, representatives fall under MAS's continuing professional development regime, which includes a minimum of six Core CPD hours a year in Ethics and/or Rules and Regulations — RES5 territory, in other words. Representatives appointed for the first time are generally exempt for the remainder of that first calendar year. Confirm the hours that apply to your role with IBF and your firm.
