How to Register for the CMFAS RES5 Exam (and What Locks In)
Registering for RES5 takes about ten minutes. The reason this guide is longer than that is simple: almost everything that costs candidates a wasted exam fee is decided at registration, not on exam day. The name you type, the identification you are able to produce, the session you pick — each one is checked at the door by an invigilator whose decision is final, and none of them can be fixed on the spot.

Who runs RES5, and who registers you
Financial advisory services in Singapore are regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The CMFAS examinations themselves are administered by the Singapore College of Insurance (SCI), and you book a sitting through your SCI candidate account on the SCI website.
Registration may be made and paid for either by you or by your employer — SCI's rules explicitly contemplate both, and many agencies and banks register new joiners in a batch. That is convenient, but it does not transfer the risk: the particulars submitted are still the particulars you will be verified against at the door. If your firm registered you, ask to see exactly what was submitted — the spelling of your name, your identification number and your date of birth — and check it against the document you intend to bring.

The exact-match rule: the most expensive registration mistake
SCI's examination rules are unusually blunt on this point. Invigilators strictly enforcethe rule to turn away candidates whose name, as it appears on their identification document, does not match the information given to SCI at registration. No appeals are entertained, no exceptions are made, and the invigilator's decision is final. A candidate turned away has to pay all fees again to re-register.
Changes need an appointment — at least one working day ahead
This matters most to two groups: candidates whose passport name and everyday name differ, and candidates registered in bulk by an employer who typed the name from an HR record rather than from the ID itself.
Identification: what you must be able to produce
SCI updated its identification requirement with effect from 8 December 2025, and it is stricter than most candidates expect. You are now required to bring two forms of valid, current, government-issued photo identification — one of which must be your Singpass ID, presented through the Singpass app for identity verification and exam admission, plus a physical photo ID.
Set up Singpass before exam day, not at the door
For the physical document, SCI's examination rules list what counts:

If the invigilator considers it necessary, they may ask for an alternative form of identification and you are obliged to produce it — and no extra exam time is granted for the delay. If that document also fails to match your registered particulars, you are turned away.
What you agree to the moment you register
By registering, you are deemed to have accepted SCI's examination rules and regulations in full. Four consequences are worth knowing before you click pay:
- You cannot cancel. SCI states plainly that cancellation of examination registrations is not allowed. Withdrawal and rescheduling policies exist, but a registration is a spend, not a placeholder — see the RES5 exam dates guide for how rescheduling is tiered by how early you ask.
- Arrive inside the admission window. The room opens 15 minutes before the start time, and anyone arriving more than 30 minutes after the exam commences is refused entry and recorded as absent — fees non-refundable, non-deferrable and non-transferrable.
- Devices carry a debarment, not a warning. Any candidate caught with unauthorised material or an electronic device — mobile phone, smart watch, tablet, recorder — faces a minimum six-month debarment from all future SCI examinations on top of disqualification, and is reported to their company and to the regulator. MAS may bar those caught cheating or impersonating from entering the financial industry at all. Leave the watch in the bag.
- Bring your own calculator. None is provided, and neither is stationery. It must be non-programmable, with no graphic or word display, and you are responsible for ensuring nothing is tucked inside its case.
Choosing your sitting
RES5 in English runs as a computer-screen examination on weekdays, and you choose your own slot rather than waiting for a national exam date. Two choices at booking have knock-on effects:
- Session time. Sessions starting before and after 5:00 p.m. are priced differently, and moving into a later session can attract a top-up even when a reschedule itself is free. Details in the RES5 exam cost guide.
- Your date decides your study text. SCI publishes a release date for each new RES5 study text version and a separate date from which examinations are set on it. Booking either side of a changeover changes what you are examined on — check before you pick a slot near one.

Fees
The main cost is SCI's examination fee for the module, which varies by session type, plus the study text and any preparatory course. SCI sets and revises these, so we do not quote a figure that could be stale — confirm the current amount on the SCI website before you pay. Exam format, so you know what you are booking
- A single computer-screen, multiple-choice module — 150 questions over 3 hours.
- Part I — Rules & Regulations: 110 questions, pass at 75%.
- Part II — Ethics & Skills: 40 questions, pass at 80%.
- You must clear both thresholds — there is no combined score, and the smaller part carries the higher bar. Figures are set by SCI and can change, so confirm them before you sit.

What you get afterwards
For CMFAS examinations you receive your result immediately on completion: you click Finish, then collect a printed result slip from the invigilator and check it is yours before you leave the room.
