A MediShield Life member in Class C is admitted twice in the same policy year. The Class C deductible for those aged 80 and below is S$1,500 and, under MediShield Life, the deductible is payable only once every policy year. His first admission has a claimable amount of S$5,000 and his second S$6,000 (both fully exceed the deductible). On which admission(s) is the deductible applied, and what total deductible does he bear for the year?
The MediShield Life deductible is payable only once per policy year. It is met on the first admission that reaches it, so the S$1,500 is borne on the first admission; the second admission in the same policy year is not subject to a further deductible. Total deductible for the year = S$1,500.
Re-applying the deductible to each admission (S$3,000) ignores the once-per-policy-year rule; the deductible is not waived just because the bills exceed it, and it attaches to the first qualifying claim, not the larger one.
